Al-Saleh Mosque... The Story of Building the Largest Islamic Monument in Yemen's History
In the southern suburbs of the Yemeni capital, Sana'a, stands the largest Islamic and architectural monument in the history of contemporary Yemen. It is the Al-Saleh Mosque, a unique architectural and engineering masterpiece, and one of the largest and most important religious and scientific monuments in the Arab and Islamic worlds.
This unmistakable monument, one of the most important architectural landmarks in Sana'a today, was ordered to be built by former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh at his own expense. From the inception of its idea and the commencement of its construction to its opening and the performance of the first prayer within its courtyard, the mosque has gone through several stages that reveal important chapters in the story of the construction of the largest Islamic monument in the country's history, since the advent of Islam in the sixth year of the Hijra.
The Al-Saleh Mosque, which took eight years to build and cost over $100 million, covers an area of 224,821 square meters and can accommodate approximately 45,000 worshippers indoors and outdoors. Its parking lot accommodates 1,900 vehicles, along with extensive gardens, walkways, and green belts.
